Problem during startup

When I start my computer, after the desktop has appeared I hear a ding
during the loading process.
Does this mean that a file has not opened properly?
If so how can I find out which file is faulty.
I have XP Home + SP2

Depends on what software is loading at startup... unless there is some error
message I'd guess that it's just some startup program announcing that it's
ready. Maybe someone will recognise it but if not maybe you could list the
programs that start with windows?

Perhaps. Use msconfig | Startup, to tweak

That's what msconfig is there for.
