problem during bootup

I have a problem during the boot process. My screen comes up in
1280x1024 mode as it should, but during the boot process it changes to
1024x768. I can reset it manually, but the problem happens the next
time I boot.

I think the problem is with something in msconfig/start. Is there a
way I can have it load one of those things at a time to determine
which is causing the problem?

Is there another way to try to fix it?

The way to handle this is by a technique well-known to electronic engineers-
'half-split testing'

Untick the first half of the msconfig entries and reboot.

If the fault has been cleared, re-tick half of the entries you unticked.
Reboot and see if that brings the fault back.

If not, then untick half of the remaining entries. Now see if the fault is
cleared.

Repeat the process, halving the number of items ticked/unticked each time,
until the fault has been localised to one item.

Working this way, if there are -say- 32 msconfig entries, then it should
take at most five reboots to localise the problem. Working by a random
approach, or by a one-by-one approach, would take on average 16 and at
worst-case 32 reboots.

Hope this helps, Ian.

I know about that, but I was hoping there was an easier way, so I
could go through the bootup items one at a time.

I used that method and eventually tracked down the culprit. It sure
would be easier if you could say yes/no to each item in startup. I
think you used to be able to do that in DOS.
