I have just built up a new AMD64, and put XP Pro SP1 on it. I installed
the built in networking card drivers, and verified I am getting a IP
address. I can connect to the internet fine, but when I'm trying to
reach \\web2\temp for example, I am unable to. I'm not prompted for my
username,password, etc. I can't ping it either.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I set this machine up to have the
WORKGROUP domain since I'm not using AD.

Thanks!
Steve

You are confused. The question I have is simple: are you actually
using a Server OS as a "fileserver" or are you using another client
like XP or 2000?

Also, there isn't a "WORKGROUP domain" unless you created a domain
named WORKGROUP, have a Domain Controller for it, and then joined your
XP machine to it. I have a feeling you are just using a workgroup and
NOT a domain. Yes, the difference in terminology is extremely
important.

If you have a true Server OS running your fileserver, and you aren't
in a domain structure, then make sure that all machines in your system
have identical user accounts, using identical, non-blank passwords.
Otherwise you'll run into the problem of being asked for user
credentials.

You also haven't stated how you are connecting the machine together -
via a hub, using ICS, two separate modems, crossover calbe - what?
