XP Pro SP1 machine :

Recently I noticed that clicking on any link someone would send in email,
would not work in OE6.

Further, any links sent in MS Messenger 6.1 do not do anything if clicked
on.

And many links in IE6 do not do anything when clicked ... there is a pause
like it is trying ... but nothing comes up.

I just noticed that clicking on the Windows Update icon gives an hour glass
for a while, but no IE window comes up.

(I have a Win98SE machine connected to the same router, and all these things
work fine on it.)

Norton NAV 2003 didn't find anything. Trend Micro's online HouseCall found
a trojan or two, and deleted them. I disabled Norton and am currently
running Avast, which found several trojans or their parts. But no
improvement.

I have run Spybot S&D recently. But no improvement.

I have deleted Windows Temp files and also Internet files, including cookies
.... but no change.

Thanks for any help !

I should have added:

It seems that links involving Javascript dont work. When I turn on the
Status Bar (which for some reason has refused to "stick" on, on my
particular XP installation !!), and see what is going to happen when my
cursor is over a link ... it is the Java ones that do not work.

Tips?

Thanks !
