I misguidedly re-installed Windows XP Pro and now find
that I cannot access all my documents, pictures, data etc.
I know they are there because I can see them in 'My
Computer' but I don't know to get at them.
What do I have to do to sort this out? (Please explain in
easy steps as I am a geriatric surfer!)

is there a chance you're logged-in using a different user account than
before?
for example the user profiles (their settings and files) are usually under
"c:\documents and settings" folder at the subfolders that each have a user's
name (there are some hidden user accounts there used by the system and
various apps too so that they run with less rights than an admin for
security reasons)

btw, what do you mean can't access?

do you see the files in "my documents" for example but can't open them?
(right clicking a folder and selecting properties has "security" tab in the
dialog shown and you can add permissions to users for reading/writing etc.
if you use NTFS filesystem instead of FAT32 - log in as "administrator" or
similar high-priviledged account first)

or you can't see them in "my documents" but can find them under "documents
and settings" folder if you search in its subfolders?

try to describe a bit more the situation (what prompts you see etc.)
