Machine Messiah

I have a friend who found an hp machine with XP pro installed.
The machine ran fine until he tried to add more ram. If he uses the 2
original sticks, XP pro boots w/o problems. If he adds 1 stick of 256
ram Xp boots fine, it doesn't matter which slot he uses. He he tries to
boot with 2 sticks of 256 ram XP won't boot. He gets "since your
computer was shut down incorrectly..." and the boot menu. No matter
which option he picks, XP pro refuses to start.
Any ideas? Does that sound like a Windows issue or a hardware problem?
I maxed out both the ram and the cpu on my machine with XP Home with no
problems.
He's currently looking for a bios update for the mobo. The current bios
sees the added ram just fine.
tia.

If all is correct with the added ram, mhz, type, etc. Then youre problem is
the board (as most do),require ram to be installed in pairs, the 2 original,
no problem, the 3rd will or can nulify the other 2,leaving you with 256mb
only.
Solution,buy a 4 stick of ram.

There are only 2 slots. The 2 new sticks are identical to one another,
same brand. That's what I told him, the sticks need to match. He knew
that already.
Thanks for the reply.
