Problem accessing Word

I wonder if anyone can help me. When I open up Word I get a message saying it didn't close down properly last time and asks whether I want to open in safe mode. The "no" option is highlighted, but whichever I choose Word still won't open. The "registered to ..." box comes up then locks and I have to re-boot to get rid of it.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do??

Thanks,
LB

My first action would be to totally shut down my computer to a full and
complete stop. Then restart the computer is see what happens.

Hi,

Locate normal.dot on the system (start/search/files) and rename it to
something else. Then retry opening Word. If this fails to correct it, you
will need to run a repair installation from your MSOffice installation disk.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

Rick: I've tried searching for this file but it can't be found. Perhaps that's the problem?

Normally the normal.dot file is located in C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Hi,

Michael has pointed out its usual location. You may need to set folder
options so that you can see it.

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options, and on the View tab, set the options
so you can see hidden and system files. Specifically:

Enable (check) "Display the contents of system folders"
Enable (check) "Show hidden files and folders"
Disable (uncheck): "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"

I also recommend that you disable (uncheck) "hide extensions for known file
types".
