If this subject has been addressed 1,000 times, I apologize.
I have searched all day without any success to an answer

Setup:
This is on a single stand alone computer.
Not Connected to the internet or anything.
Running Windows XP.
I have uninstalled Trend Micro virus protection.
I have turned off firewall projection.
The name of the computer is paullaptop.
The workgroup is WORKGROUP
There is only one user setup for this machine and I have admin rights.

Problem
when I click start, run, and type \\paullaptop and press enter
i get a window that shows my shared printers and shared folders
i can access my printers but i get the following error message on all
shared folders

\\paullaptop\foldername is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.
The network location cannot be reached.

I have done this on windows 2000 machines but seem to be stuck now.

Please Help.

Thanks.

Paul,

This subject comes up a lot, but there are many possible specific causes. The
most common is a misconfigured or overlooked firewall. Be persistent here.

Are the printers accessed by server name, or by IP address? The error "The
network location cannot be reached." implies a name resolution problem. That
doesn't make sense, if the printers are on the same server. Here's what we know
about the error.

And consider LSP / Winsock corruption.

Chuck,

Thanks for you response.
I tried the suggestions without any luck.

I can't find any firewall that is still active or on in any way. I
have even rebooted in safe mode w/networking and get the same message.

In response to your question about the printers, I see the shared
printers when i do start/run and type \\paullaptop and press enter. I
guess you would say i am accessing them by server name. I have gone
out to the dos command prompt and typed ipconfig /all and do not see
any ip numbers. I assume this is because i am not connected to a
network to get my ip numbers auto. assigned. Also i do not see a
primary DNS suffix under IPconfig /all. Could this have anything to
with my problem?

The printers displayed are the printers i installed on this one pc.
Again this pc is not attached to any kind of network. I am working
within this pc itself.

I read the LSP/winsock corruption link but do not understand.

One last note, this is a new laptop running windows XP media edition.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Paul,

LSP / Winsock is a massive stack of programs, which are called by the network
software, when necessary. LSP / Winsock is subject to being corrupted, which
can make some network functions stop working, while others continue with no
problem. It works differently for different protocols, for incoming traffic vs
outgoing traffic, for traffic destined to the Internet vs traffic that stays
local on the subnet, and dozens of other factors.

There are numerous things that you can check, which can affect access to the
shared resources on any computer ("server"). Most of these, though, should
affect file shares equally as printer shares, unless you have explicitly set a
permission.

Now XP MCE has the internals of XP Pro, so XP MCE with Simple File Sharing
disabled, and using non-Guest authentication, should give granular permissions
to your shared data.

Your problem _could_ possibly be related to name resolution, but on a small LAN,
you're probably using broadcast, not server (DNS). So it's vaguely possible
that the DNS suffix could be involved, but that's a stretch.

But start here, and if these articles don't give you something to think about,
we can try some diagnostics. Just be persistent, and look at other threads
here. Many problems aren't solved in a couple q&a sessions, but many more can
be solved, with enough patience and persistence.

Chuck,

I'm not sure if i fixed my problem the correct way, but i finally got
it to work by installing the microsoft loop back adapter.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
