I have this really big problem I hope someone could help
me. I downloaded SP2 then after the installation, it
required a reboot so I reboot it. then when it restarted,
all of a sudden it hung up. All I could see was the
Windows Xp with the black background. I think it hung-up
after performing the POST. I hope someone would help me
please. I need a reply urgent.. thanks!

thanx for the info..but during the first reboot..it
already happened (hung-up) I've been waiting for 30mins
wishing that something good might happen but still nothing
changed..that's why i power boot it again but still same
thing happened.. I also tried that safe mode and the last
known good configuration but nothing happened still.. all
it could do is hung-up..

Long after - the XP splash screen is already far into OS territory.

If it's the Prescott issue, all the info you need is in that link,
including how to know if it's the Prescott issue and how to get out.

One way is:
- CMOS setup, disable L1 and L2 cache
- now boot XP; it will run so slowly you'll think it's crashed
- Add/Remove Programs; uninstall SP2
- CMOS setup, enable L1 and L2 cache

No, just rename update.sys or replace SP2's update.sys with SP1's
update.sys
and then reenable L1 & L2 cache and SP2 will run fine.

The Update.sys is listed in the URL, but may be more difficult for
NTFS vict... er, users who can't access thier PC from the DOS mode
they don't have on HD, or from the DOS boot diskettes they don't have.

Even if I were prepared to write a full how-to on making those changes
from CD-booted Recovery Console, we still don't know whether their OS
CD includes RC, as some Big Brand OEM CDs do not.

That's before we start on how to extract SP1's Update.sys and get this
into place - tho noting that no Update.sys also appears to work.

OTOH, users may stumble on getting into CMOS setup, so that's not all
that newbie-friendly either - <brrr>

I'm also unsure whether SP2 without the CPU rev and Update.sys is
likely to be more stable than SP1, but at least the latter is a known
state (i.e. how their PC is already running).

So I made a judgement call in deciding which particular bits from the
web page on this issue to precis here ;-)
