I have recently aquired a laptop, and it seems to have a wireless ability,
but when I try to go to wireless I often get told there is no wireless
signals available or that the only one is wanadoo, which is the last one I
would be interested in!

So, what do I have to do to get virgin on wireless network?

Do you know if you have any wireless networks available where you are
attempting to use it. Remember that most wireless (WAP) access points only
send a signal to a relativity small area (the one at my house is only
"visible" to a properly configured computer for 50 feet outside the home and
I have an extended antenna on mine) unless there are more transmitters or
repeaters in the area. Without the proper SSID and the proper WEP or other
security set on your computer you may not see a WAP that is broadcasting
right next to the computer.

When I am in a strange area and need to find a WAP that is unsecured, I have
to continually check the computer and have it refresh. When it finds one, I
pull over and may even have to backtrack a little to get a good connection
(thanks to all those out there that leave their wireless connections
unprotected, and I do only use your internet connection.)

According to FCC regulations, that is theft of RF signal. It is not unlawful
to receive other's transmissions, but it is when you use the signal for your
transmission.

But, if they are stupid enough to leave the signal open.... and who is going
to catch me in the act?

Actually, I was trying to tell the guy to make sure that his emissions are
controlled if and when he is using wireless in a subtle way. Many people do
just what I have said since I have a totally open wireless signal in my
neighborhood that I can pick up any time I want. The idiot didn't even
change the SSID from Linksys. I haven't delved into their computer enough
to find out who it is to tell them to fix their problem.
