I have xp pro on and I want to install xp home but when I
popped in my home cd and tried to install it it has an
error almost right when I start the installation.
Something about "your current installaion is not an
upgrade path" or something like that. any help?

Yes, it's right. You can not "downgrade" from Windows XP Pro to Home. you
will have to do a Clean Install of Windows XP Home if you wish to make this
change.

so how do i do a clean install of home. you mean like
uninstall pro and them do home? tell me the things i have
to do. Will I lose any files in the process?

You will lose everything so you need to make sure that you have
backups that you can restore.

One way to facilitate this is to use the Files And Settings Transfer
Wizard from the accessories - System Tools menu. Save the
information from your existing install to another hard drive
partition, a network drive or a backup device such as a CD burner.

Then after you have reformatted, installed XP Home, and reinstalled
the application programs you can run FASTW again to import the saved
data.

Former MVP Gary Woodruff has written an article on using FASTW which
you will find at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

Good luck
