Ok, so one day I hit ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager to close a
program that has frozen on me) but ulike every other day, I get the message
"Task manager has been disabled by your administrator".

which strikes me as very odd, as I just so happen to be the administrator
and there is nobody else who uses my computer to change the settings. I've
gone through all I know to make sure I'm the administrator and I've
reinstalled windows (over the top of the old instalation, I dont know how to
format the hard disk) and I'm still told task manager is disabled... any
pointers?

oh, I'm running windows XP pro (and the box says its got service pack 2)

Very likely caused by a virus, but read here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm

ya, it was a virus, it had disabled most of the ways to fix the issue too, so
I figured out how to format the disk completely and reinstalled windows and
the porblem is gone. :-)

I'm glad the problem is gone, but formatting and reinstalling to get
rid of a virus is a draconian solution that's very seldom needed.
Anti-virus software usually works very well.
