I moved 'My Documents' folders to a data partition on the same hard drive
and made the entire thing private!! I have now had to reinstall my operating
system (XP) again after a system crash and unfortunately I can now not
access 'My Documents'- it gives me an access error. I know it doesnt see me
as the rightful owner but when I reinstalled the OS I set myself up with the
same username and password so I dont understand why it still doesnt believe
its me. Is there a key in the registry I can delete or something so I can
access. I am getting very frustrated and would appreciate anyones help.

Were the files "made private" because you encrypted them?

If yes, you're outta luck. Eventhough you used the same userid, the SID
entry for the account has been updated/changed in the SID database upon
reinstallation of the OS. When you reinstalled the OS, the encryption
security certificate key went bye-bye (unless you saved the certificate file
to a floppy...) If you did, check the help documentation for restoring the
security certificate from the disk.

If they weren't encrypted, then I'm assuming you "made them private" via
NTFS permissions. If so, log on as an administrator and "take ownership" of
the files and re-divy the permissions...OR, disable simple file security and
go to NTFS security and take ownership.

Sorry for the bad news. Maybe more help can be given if you post a few more
details on what you mean by "made private".

Hope this helps.

i have a similar problem i have tried what you said and the ownership options do not appear
