I have a user with a laptop computer running Windows XP
Home edition. In our office we have a NT 4 domain with a
Windows XP Pro PC acting as a print server for a HP
Laserjet 6P printer. I am able to print to this printer
from 98SE and 2000 Pro Workstations. Generally I browse
Network Neighborhood to the shared printer and install
that way. I also tried the ADD Printer Wizard. When I
browse to the XP Pro PC which is the print server I
cannot access the shared printer from the HP Home
Laptop.

I cannot join the domain to browse the network and
install the printer in XP Home. How can I get the XP Home
laptop to print to the XP Pro PC which is a print server
and a domain member

There are key differences between Windows XP Home Edition and
Windows XP Professional when it comes to accessing and using
Windows NT 4 domain-based resources and services,
which are common to many large organizations.

Both Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional
allow you to connect to resources in a domain, either on the local
network, or via a Remote Access Services (RAS) or virtual private
network (VPN) connection. But Windows XP Professional is the
only version of Windows XP that allows users to join and be managed
by the domain (e.g., by logon scripts or group policies). A computer
running Windows XP Professional not joined to a domain also allows
you to enter domain credentials once only when accessing the domain
resources on the local network
(vs. having to authenticate upon each request as with Windows XP Home Edition).

XP Home is not designed to join a domain. In order to do so,
an upgrade to XP Pro will be required.
