Printing directly to a printer?

Hi. I'm wondering about the printer setting "Print directly to the printer":
Does it really mean that the client prints literally directly to the
printer, or does it mean that the server just passes the print job thru
without spooling it to file?

What I need is a way for my WinXP clients to print _directly_ to the
printers without going thru a server (Win2003). I also need to be able to
automate setting up printers to clients since manually creating TCP/IP
ports, choosing drivers and names is not an option here. Can this be done
using "regular" server shared printers?

The reason I want to do this is beacuse all my branch offices are
serverless, and I don't want my print jobs going across the slow WAN twice
everytime someone prints.

Any ideas for me? Thanx in advance! /Anders
