Printer wows in XP

I've tried so many suggestions and non has worked. Printers (Epson 870,
Epson 740) print a portion of an 8x10 and errors paper not loaded etc.
Formatted, reinstalled, registry edited, but occasionally it works. It did
work before Christmas same system, windows updates? I've heard maybe
scanner? Tired must sleeeep.

What gives you the idea that the problem is XPs fault?
Have you tried uninstalling the drivers, rebooting XP,
then installing the latest drivers? Do both printer fail?
Are both computer attached at the same time? Or were
you trying different printer to find the failure? Maybe it's
a flakey cable. Also are these USB printers and do you
have SP1 installed?

And also, when was the last time you actually cleaned the printer itself
including the print heads? The sensors may be gunked up or (most
likely) it is just a bad driver/software install. Epson software is
very touchy and works great when it installs well, but often doesn't
install right :(
