printer sharing problem, rest of network OK

We have recently added a new computer and printer to our home network. The
two computers concerned with this problem are running XP and the network is
connected via a wireless ADSL router.
The shared internet connection and file sharing work fine. The problem is I
can't print across the network from my computer to the new computer's
printer. The printer works fine from the new computer it is directly
connected to. I have enabled printer sharing, added the printer details to
my computer and been checking and rechecking everything for ages but with no
joy. The XP troubleshooter says there is something wrong with the network,
but I don't understand this as all other network stuff works fine.
When I try to print, it gives the impression it has worked from my computer,
but when I check the printer there is nothing there. I was getting some kind
of status error message this morning, but that seems to have stopped now(?)
When I check the new computer there is nothing there to suggest a problem.
I am particularly miffed as printer sharing worked fine via the old win98
computer!
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

on the "new" pc ,is the internal firewall on ...and configured for sharing ?

Have turned all firewalls off while I try to set this up (apart from router
firewall which is set up to allow traffic between both computers).
