Printer runs but won't install to DeviceManager

I have Home XP with a restore disk, which came with this computer.
It's been two months, but I only got around to adding my printer
today, a two-year-old Samsung ML-4500 series laser printer that I'd
been using with my old win98 machine . When I went to install the
driver on the CD, I got a message that the driver was unsigned by
Microsoft. There was a prompt to connect with Windows Update, which I
okayed. The dialogue box became unreadable while the connection and a
several-minute download took place; I don't know whether it was
completed when the connection terminated.

I ran off a small text file, worked okay.

Looked at Device Manager, nothing for printer, including after a
reboot. Every now and then I get a box indicating that Windows has
discovered new hardware. I try to point it towards the driver install
area (first the one on CD and later to a downloaded update from
Samsung). There is no .inf file with either, so this may be why it
fails to make a meaningful connection. The end result is an error
message saying that it couldn't be added.

FWIW, the updated driver didn't work, brought up an error box about
things divisible by zero, so I returned to the driver from the CD.

Bottom line is that the printer works, for which I'm grateful, but I
really feel I should be seeing it in the Device Manager.

hehe, welcome to the world of XP. You shud have a look
to see if your printer is compatible with XP somewhere on
this site. I have endless compatibility probs with XP
but it is the best OS
