mpwg readers,
I have an annoying problem with my printer. It is a HP Office Pro
1170cxi. It is connected to the normal printer port on a pc with
Windows XP with all upgrades installed. The problem is that if I turn
off the printer with the pc on and then turn the printer on again it
doesn't print but shows a print error on the print qeue. To get the
printer to work again I must reboot the computer. The printer works
ok if I turn it on after the computer is running or if it is on when I
boot the computer. It only fails when I turn it off and on again while
the computer is running. The printer is shared in a home network and
this problem occurs with the root machine. As mentioned before this
is just an annoyance since I can make sure no one shuts off the
printer or if it is shut off to reboot the pc. I have searched the
microsoft KB but couldn't find anything similar and am hoping one of
you experts out there may recognize the problem Any help is
appreciated in advance.

Before shutting down your printer, rightclick the icon, probably next to clock
to "Safely Remove Hardware". A window will pop up to shut it down properly.
This icon will pop up each time the printer is activated.

Byte,
Thanks for replying. I tried that but only the usb devices come up.
I don't think this utility applies to the normal printer port which I
think is a LPT(?) or serial port.

The hp 1170 is old enough so that HP didn't write an XP driver. Although hp
claims that both printing and scanning will work with the native XP drivers,
they say that "much of the functionality that was previously supplied by the
HP software" is avaialbe in XP. "Much of" does not equal "all."

That said, try going into your BIOS and change the parallel port properties
to ECP mode, then set the port as described in http://tinyurl.com/czohb
