This sounds more like a hardware problem - nothing to do with
windowsxp.general.
What have HP got to say about this problem?

That sounds like the print heads are clogged.

You may be able to remove the cartridges and the heads and clean them
manually but you have to be real careful. I'm not exactly sure what type of
cartridges it takes but if you can stand them upside down and place a damp
cloth over them you can sometimes soften up congealed ink. This is
effectively what the "Cleaning" cycle is supposed to do but any inkjet that
isn't used often suffers from similar problems.

I agree with Charlie T - some weeks back there was a discussion in hardware,
I think, as to a suitable fluid for cleaning the heads as opposed to the
cartridge. Sorry forgot the result :-(
If the normal head cleaning under 'utilities' does not work then its the
heads. I had same prob 18months ago. - took it to the local shop and they
cleaned the heads for me(done free-I know them) but some places I have heard
charge the price of a new printer!
They also advised that when the printer is not being used, switch it off.
Also they said it is not an easy DIY job.
