Printer Port Configuration

I have a new computer system running XP. I've never had a printer or anything connected to the printer port, yet when I try to connect a device to the port it doesn't ackknowledge that it's there. How do I configure that port so I can connect a device to it for "exchange of information". Let's just say it's a programmer. Thanks
