Printer Drivers won't install -- but all else will

Hi everyone. I'm having an odd problem on one of my machines running
XP Pro/SP 2: Whenever I try to initiate a setup/install of printer
druvers, my CD-ROM spins but the setup wizard, etc. never begins. The
drive is fine, and other programs install normally, but when laoding
-- say -- an Epson 1270 printer-driver CD, or other CDs that rekate to
printing, the install simply hangs. I'm wondering if I've somehow
changed a printer-sharing setting in XP (I was trying to get this
desktop unit connected to a network), or perhaps I've done something
inadvertently along similar lines? The software in question installs
fine on my laptop, and I don't believe SP2 is at fault because these
difficulties predated that upgrade.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm trying to avoid having to
reinstall XP.

Thanks very much in advance...aa.

You did not state whether the printer is USB or parallel connected. I'm
assuming that it is USB. The best way to install is to let WindowsXP do it
for you with the "plug&play" feature. Delete anything you have installed up
to
this point. Shutdown your PC, plug in the printer and then boot.
WindowsXP will come up with a balloon that it "found new hardware" and ask
you if you want to install it. Click "Yes" and will start to install, if it
cannot find
drivers in XP's Bin file, it will ask you to insert the installation disk,
or where the
drivers are located. Voila!

XP Pro finds the USB printers fine, thanks. That's actually not my
problem. It's when I've tried to install additional software from CD
-- in my case Epson's printer-specfic drivers for the Photo 1270, or a
disk with Piezography software (a Photoshop plug-in for quadtone B&W
printing) with an Epson 1160. Again, the drive spins the CD for a few
seconds, but the setup wizard never starts. Laptop handles the
identical disks fine, and my desktop drive(s) are fine with other CDs.
It's either some odd setting in XP that I've changed without knowing,
or somehow XP has become corrupted.

I may just go ahead and reinstall XP over my current configuration and
see if that solves the problem. What I _don't_ want is to have to do
another clean install.

thanks...aa.

I have a similar problem. I just built a new PC and installed XP SP2.
Various s/w has been installed no problem. But when I tried to install the
Epson CX3200 software I found that the DVD drive would spin, but autorun
did not run. If I double click on the epsetup file or the setup file
(using Explorer) then nothing happens.

If I open the CD and navigate to each utility sub-folder I can double
click on the setup files and most of them run; I have installed epcopy,
epson card monitor, photostarter, epprint, epweb, starter, smartpanel and
twain 5. STM3 not install, nothing happens at all when you double click
the setup file just like the main driver setup file.

I have now called Epson 3 times. They sent a new CD which behaved like the
other one. I downloaded the driver from the website - nothing happened. I
tried disabling all startups with msconfig - still no difference. The last
Epson support guy hadn't got a clue. Nor have I.

Can anybody help?

PS I am aware that Epson are producing a new driver on 1st Dec for this
printer. But I'm not sure this will help. Interestingly as an experiment I
inserted an old Epson Color 850 CD and found that this would not autorun
either and when I double clicked on the setup file nothing happened. So
there must be something strange about Epson drivers with SP2.
