I'm curious, how you yall manage printers for users. Specifically how do you
make things easy enough for users to find and add printers they need instead
of having to email helpdesk to ask which printer they should use. I'm
curious into preloading all printers into the win2kpro default RIS load, but
that doesn't necessarily specify the right printer. I'd appreciate any
ideas. thanks.

You could try this: Create a share in one of your file servers, call it
"Company Printers" or whatever makes sense to you, and make it available to
everyone. Below this you should create a tree that represents your physical
infrastructure. As an example, suppose you have three sites in your company
and each site composed of a series of buildings, so the tree should look like
this:

Company Printers
---Site A
---Accounting
---Building A
---Building B
---HR
---Building B
---Building C
... And so on

After you have finished this, you have to add a shortcut under each leaf of
the tree to the corresponding printer(s). Once everything is set up, the end
user only needs to know where in the tree he or she is standing and choose
the appropriate printer by right-clicking on it and selecting install. That
would be it. Hope this helps.

Bit non-technical way of doing it... not sure if it suits your needs.

We install network printer drivers on a shared print server (or even a file
server).
The point is everybody knows they print via xxxx server, whichever printer
they use.

Then we share each of the printers out with an appropriate name. (e.g.
Sales).
The simple bit is we then stick a prominent label on each of the printers,
showing what their Q name is (e.g. \\print-svr\Sales).

As long as you've shared the printers on the server, staff walk to the
printer, look at the label and know where to browse to in the 'Add printers'
dialog.

HTH.

Jeff.
