How do I print a watermark (picture) on just the first page of my document?
The margins also change for the second page on. Word gives me the option to
either have it or not, doesn't give me a choice as to what pages I want it on.

Hi Lisa-

This is not difficult to do, but may vary a little depending on which
version of Word & how the watermark was actually created. Please post back
with more details |:>)

We're using Word 2003. I did format, background, printed watermark, and
inserted a jpg picture. The "picture" is our letterhead - a band at the top
and bottom.

Although this can be done using Format | Background | Printed Watermark, it
would be much easier to do manually. Regardless of how you do it, you'll
need to enable the "Different first page" setting to get a First Page
Header; easiest thing from there is just to insert the picture in the First
Page Header, set to Behind Text wrapping. See

Different first page is selected, and that works for page 2. Then I'm typing
along - type, type, type, and page 3 comes, and there's the watermark again.
So at the end of page 2, I have to go to File, page setup, Layout, make sure
that new Page is selected, and then click on "from this point forward" in
Apply To. The watermark on the next page disappears, but then it pops up
again when I get to the next page. It works, but is a pain in the butt.

Since our letterhead is a full-page graphic, top and bottom, I've asked our
marketing director to split it up so that I can put them in the header/footer.

1) You can put a full-page graphic in a header or footer, just make sure you
don't have text wrapping.

2) When you say apply from this point forward, you are telling Word to start
a new section. That will usually carry with it the headers and footers from
the previous section. Each section starts with its own separate first page
so a document with multiple sections will have multiple first pages for
purposes of headers and footers (and sometimes page numbering). You do _not_
want to be inserting section breaks willy-nilly in a document. They are
useful but they also can cause all sorts of problems and mysteries, even if
they don't corrupt the document.

Take a look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you
want one header on the first page and a different header on other pages.
http://www.addbalance.com/word/headersfooters.htm This gives step-by-step
instructions. (It also has the following links)

If you are interested in creating templates that will work with the letter
wizard or use that wizard, you should look at the chapter on Advanced
Document Formatting in Using Office 2003 (or whatever your version is),
Special Edition, by Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard. It has detailed instructions
including instructions on getting the fields you want from your Outlook
Contacts for addressing a letter. (Chapter 19 of SE Using Office 2003) You
should be able to get this through your public library or at Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0789729555/balancecheckbookA/

Finally, take a look at the letter templates that come with Word. While they
are no great shakes as letterhead, they do use styles and AutoText lists
very well. If you use the same style names that are used in those templates
in your own letterhead for the same parts of the document, you will have
better luck with using the built-in AutoText entries in Word.

Hope this helps,

The idea of "Different first page" is to allow you to have one watermark or
logo or chunk of text or whatever on the first page and a different one on
*all* the remaining pages. For a letter, this would be the expected thing:
you have a letterhead on the first page and then a "second sheet" letterhead
(or just a page number or whatever) on the remaining sheets. What exactly is
it that you are trying to do?

I think that is what the OP is trying to do, but additional section breaks
are being inserted, probably without a new page, by attempts to make it from
this point forward.
