"Print to file" not working anymore

I used to use the "print to file" option quite a bit and never had any
trouble when I would open those files and print them later.

Lately, that option doesn't work. How can I get these files to print again?
(They are usually webpages.) I've read other posts in this newsgroup, but
the solutions offered haven't worked for me...but then I'm not a real
computer guru. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!
Angie

Hi Angie

Can you be a bit more explicit about what you mean when you say "Lately,
that option doesn't work"? What exactly are you doing and what is
happening?

Before I had a printer at home, I "printed to file" webpages I found at home,
saving them on my jump drive then printing them at work on an HP PhotoSmart
P1000.

Now, I have an identical printer at home but don't always want to
immediately print webpages (usually receipts for things I've ordered or for
bills I've paid), so I "print to file", saving those files in a folder on my
desktop.

When I do get ready to print them, I double-click the files (saved as *.prn)
and I get the OS window that asks me what program I want to open the files
with...but nothing opens them AND they won't print.

I've tried the instructions Pegasus and Paul Randall gave in the "Printing a
PRN file" thread, but all that does is create a copy of the exact same file I
have...which still doesn't print.

Does that make more sense?

Thanks, Angie

They're not really meant to be opened :-) They can, as Paul Randall
said, be edited in a text editor, but for most purposes they're just
instructions to the printer on how to print your page.

How do you have your printer connected, USB or parallel port? If it's
not on the parallel port, then using the copy command to send it to
LTPn: won't work unless you first do this:

Set the printer to Shared, and give it a share name.
Click on Start | Run and type:

NET USE LPT1 \\computer name\printer share name

Then try this command again and hopefully it should work:
COPY /b \path\filename.prn LPT1:

You might find it easier to use the utility Paul mentioned, or print
your web page to PDF instead. I use PrimoPDF and find it excellent. To
use it you just click on Print as usual, but select PrimoPDF as the
"printer". You can find it here: http://www.primopdf.com/

Hope some of this helps. Let us know how you get on!

For PDF generator I have used with great success the free pdfedit995
software.
