I am trying to re-install my printer and I am receiving a message that "print
spooler service is not running". What is this message telling me? Just
before New Year's I got whacked with several viruses that went into my
System32. I had to put several .dlls and .exes in a virus vault as my anti
virus was unable to fix them. Does anyone know if this would affect my print
spooler? I need help fast. I have an appointment at 1pm today and I need to
get some documents printed.

Go to start, run
type
services.msc
Press Enter/OK

Find the Print Spooler service and see whether the status says 'started'. If
not, right-click on it and choose 'start'.

If it doesn't start, report back with any error messages - and you might
also check your event logs for errors.

Start | run
type
eventvwr
press enter/ok.

I tried going to start/run and typing MSC and I get the message that it can't
be found. I went to system32/spool/printers and it is empty. I went to
Administrative Services to print spooler and it's empty. I think I am
missing something critical and I don't know what it is. Thanks in advance
for any additional help.

You need to type services.msc but you can access the Services if your right
click on My Computer\Manage\Services and Applications\Services

That's because you didn't type the entire command:
Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

If your Administrative Tools icons are missing, see
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/admintools.htm
or try line 299:

And, as always, make sure your computer is 100% virus/malware-free:

It would be good if I typed what I was supposed to. Thank you, Allen.
Followed your directions but that didn't work either. I ended up using the
suggestion of Cari(MS-MVP)from 9/23/2005 to go to
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm. I followed steps 15
thru 17 then steps 8 & 9. IT WORKED!! I printed off the above document just
in case this ever happens again.

Hi - you've posted this as a reply to someone else's message, and yet it's a
new question/issue. Few people will see this. I suggest you post a new
thread, with as much info as possible (include event log errors).
