You probably don't really want 30000 pages, but...

Open regedit and Export from the root. This creates a huge text file. You
can open the file using the editor of your choice and print it if you dare.
I am not kidding you will get thousands of pages and prpbably use enough
ink cartridges to buy a new PC.

You can also export smaller sections if you just want to look at a
particular node.

If you are'nt familliar with regedit do some reading you can really mess
things up if you are not careful.

not physically printing, just want info to a file.

Can I print to a "FILE"? looks like I can:
export file, (danger, do not left click/ try to append to registry),
but: Open With, Notepad, Save (as .txt), then del original file.

found a free program, but may not apply to this: print folders

You are saving to a file when you export.
It is already text, so I don't see that you need to do any more.
You do not need to use "Print to file" when it is already a perfectly
usable file.

Save it with a .txt extension instead of a .reg extension to avoid the
possibility of merging it accidentally.

thankyou! just jumping on learing all can about security/ performance.
wonder if this qualifies a a vehicle to restore a registry to a previous
state? (short term).
items seen: aol.. left ton of items after uninstall. don't know if
replacing registry would fix a long term.

Looking at ghosting an image, but don't know if can back an image up to span
of cd's.

why? mucho attacks

If you have to ask those questions, you shouldn't be mucking about with
the registry in the first place. Find a tech who can physically access
your PC and tell him why you want to do this.

Please do not be offended, but remember what I said before about not
messing around with the registry if you don't know what you are doing...

Based on the fact that you didn't know about saving as a txt file, and
chose to open in notepad and save as, rather than just change the
extension, I would respectfully suggest that you need to do a lot more
reading before messing around in the registry.

Again no offense intended, but the registry is incredibly complex with
many nuances and doesn't always work well even when you are not messing
with it. No offense to MS either.

PLEASE, unless you really like renistalling Windows, don't do it!

If you need to restore the registry and or your system to a previous
state look at restore points. For backup, there are a lot of good backup
programs out there and many are cheap.

IMHO It is not worth the time an effort trying to figure out some way
around the normal backup procedures...

Best wishes,
Fred.

Please respond to the OP, not to me.
I am not the one with the problem.

Yes I understand, but you were last in the thread, and I was reiterating
your caution.

Hi, thanks all for the reponses, all needed / used. few things:

- am bit of a tech myself (tech writer for one), if not here, but had 5 year
old / long registry was on last legs. I have been looking a little /
combining 6? different sets of procedures, mostly re-installing, formatting...

- if you compare that good / bad application providers are all-over my
registry, and it is already crashing. maybe have no choice but to start
over. (just that issue is not covered well as part of other procedures).

- am down more often, lately trying to restore my system. since the amount
of hours to reinstall could be: 6, 8, 10 hours (whatever installing thru
win-updates, office-updates, firewall, isp............... I see an important
step might be to learn to ghost my pc. 8 hours x "times" many attempts
killing me. point in case:

- download Win XP SP2 crashing windows\system32\pci.sys file missing /
corrupt
and:
- DELL will not give me the default PASSWORD for the MS / DELL XP OS disk,
so I could just start over with a "R"estore, instead DELL wants $100.
positive comment re that between these parenthesis: ().

- I will learn the ghost thing. Really need the password, MS password?
will make separate posting. Have been "down" 90% of time last 7 + days.

- have learned that AOL left gross size directories in Registry, after
uninstall.
deleted, pc came right up. realiazed not right, but found culprit. messing
with registry not an issue. thanks for input. understood 80% up front about
not messing with registry. now understand it is engineered to have tidbits
all over the place. (100% understand now cannot modify, thanks) would only
look for file compares of before / after at this point.

- All really need would be WIN XP OS initial ADMIN password. Leared by self
have to have copy of PCI.SYS (before / after SP2?) on a separate floppy/disk,
need password written on disk so DELL won't try for the $100/200.... I'll
stop now.
