I have to print some names on ready-made certificates.
Is there a utility that would allow me to get right on the line (or 1 or
2 mm above the line?)
I do have Office 2003 but wondered if there was a recommended app to
use.
Thanks

A word processor is probably the way to go. It will likely take a few
tries to get the margins and indents set up properly. To be safe, do
the testing on photocopies.

This goes back to Win 3.1 days, but up until about a year ago, one of
my "collateral duties" at work was as a classroom instuctor for other
employees. It sounds a little trite, but one thing I learned is that
adults like to get attractive certificates when they finish a course.
I bought bordered certificate paper for a couple of bucks at office
supply stores and used a free (CD) version of PrintMaster to make a
certificate template. All I needed to do for each class is change the
details somewhat, then print certificates one at a time by changing
the name and hitting the print button.

Your question got me to looking, and believe it or not, I found an
updated free "PrintMaster Express" available at:

http://expressit.broderbund.com/400_co_branding/internationalpaper/IPPrimary.asp

It's an 8 Meg download, but should be perfect for your purposes. As
"jb" suggested, make photocopies for testing, line up a text box for
the names, and once you've got it right, save your template for future
use, then print away. I tried it and it works fine on XP Home SP2
even though it only mentions 95/98/2000/NT4. Probably just an old
link still working.

It only took a few seconds at around 4Mbps for me on Comcast, but I
mentioned that becuse if the OP (or other readers) are on dialup, it
could take half an hour or more and may not be worth it to them.

Just to add a note:
If I scanned the certificate, is there any way to make a "tracing" of it
appear in my document as a "background" and from there use the document
as a template so I can choose where the text box goes?
Thanks

Should be possible in PrintMaster Express (mrntioned above) or ANY
similar DTP program. Scan and paste background image in portrait or
landscape as applicable, position your text box and type some sample
text for testing purposes to see if it's what you want, then delete
the background image, save the template, and you're good to go.

(Remember to take the margins into account when pasting the background
image or the results may not be exact.)

Or on plain paper and hold it up to a light behind one of the originals.

Just create a text box on document for the name to go in, center
justified, in the right place. You should be good to go after you apply
the above, high tech test method.

You could scan it and then use it as a watermark in word.
Only a suggestion as I haven't tried it myself.

I print on certificates all the time. Scanning and putting in the
background is a lot more work than needed. You'll spend all your time
trying to get the backing right .

Your best bet is to stick with the other suggestions: use a ruler to
figure out where you want the text, make text blocks, print on white
paper first and hold it up to the light.

My only suggestion would be to use a desktop publishing program instead
of a word processor. WP programs are designed for text to float
around. DP programs tack them down and, IMHO, give much finer control.

I use PagePlus from <www.freeserifsoftware.com> Yes, it's registerware
and you will get an e-mail or two. I've found that using the "opt-out"
link makes them leave me alone. John C has suggested in the past (and
a good suggestion) to use a disposable yahoo or hotmail account.

We use watermarking in Crystal reports all the time to get printing on
forms lined up correctly, and for things a lot more complicated than
this. Very good suggestion.

It's the other way around - fairly recent link - same old program. ;)

Not as old as the Win 3.1 version I was referring to that I use to
fill in certificates <g>:

PrintMaster Gold for Windows
Version 1.00.21.GT
Copyright 1995 by MicroLogic Software Inc.

(Came on a freeware CD years ago. Doubt it's available anywhere now.)

It still works by the way on XP Home SP2 so I'll keep it around <OT>
even though I use newer commercial software for most printable graphic
projects. </OT>

oops. . .

<grovel>
My most abject humble apologies. Your post was *quite* clear - despite
that I managed to misread it. :(

Dare I hope for forgiveness?

On the contrary, Susan, MY apologies for creating a misunderstanding.
You are quite correct in pointing out that PrintMaster Express is an
old program. I just wasn't aware of it being available until I
Googled around. I thought it would provide a little humor to let
readers know that what I was using is WAY older than the link I
stumbled across, so for ME it was an UPDATE. <g>
