Subject: Piracy Purchase of Microsoft Software Windows
XP Professional

I have purchased from Amazon.com what I believed to be a
legal purchase of software. To my surprise upon entering
the product key used to install windows xp professional I
was informed it is a invalid product key. How did this
happen? And with Amazon.com? It arrived from Russia via
Delaware as discussed with my mail carrier because of the
unusual postmarks and white enevelope it came in. It was
purchased on a credit card that verifies USA RUSSIA.
Yes, it was a purchase made off the internet but we have
thought to have used reliable retailers in the past and
have never had any problems.

Hello! Does anyone care? No, the program does not
work. I should have kept my windows 98SE version and
forget upgrading. I now have a mess on my hands. How do
you and Amazon let this happen?

Thank you! From a 2 household computer user... This
really Sucks!

Your complaint is with Amazon, not with Microsoft.

It's kind of like getting screwed at the drive-in, do you usually blame the
people who sold the Burger King/McDonalds the meat for the burger/potatoes
for the fries or do you blame the correct people - the people at the drive
through who didn't give you your fries?

Sure - we care - but all we can do is learn from your mistake and know not
to buy software from whatever retailer you actually bought it from - can you
give a specific link? Have you even attempted to make it right through
Amazon?

I'm not sure what you think Microsoft did here. Other than just happening to
have made the software in the first place, I don't understand how they are
involved in your problem.

I'm guessing, because only you know and you didn't see fit to say, that you
went through one of the 3rd party stores that advertise on Amazon, as such
whatever chances you have of getting any redress are with Amazon, not on
this message board.

Uh, y'all could try pointing her at somewhere to get valid media
or a valid license if the media she has is good, but the license key
is bad. It sounds like she's got a useless PC at her house and all
y'all can do is tell her to go get her money back from someone.

I don't think she is asking how to buy a valid licensed copy of Windows XP
.....she's asking what's wrong with the one she has, which is an illegal
copy.

Julie;
If the Product Key is illegal, the fix is to buy again except this
time from a reputable dealer.
Microsoft will not give a discount just because an illegal copy is
bought.
Microsoft can do nothing without proof of a legal copy.
Since the copy purchased was apparently illegal, Microsoft can do
nothing.

To solve the problem:
Contact Amazon.com, unlikely but may help.
Contact the seller if possible.
Buy a legitimate copy at full price.

You need to be careful when buying software (especially
operating systems) over the Internet. Studies indicate a
large volume of software in online retailer/auctioneer
stock is pirated. This is a big problem, especially if
the software is shipped through foreign countries.
For best results, buy from a reputable retailer (such as
Circuit City or Wal-Mart). You can also buy Windows
directly from Microsoft (http://shop.microsoft.com)
You may also want to contact the retailer that you
purchased the software from to warn them about the pirated
copy.
