On w2k Windows Explorer allowed files preview mode where one can see the
picture in a smal pane by selecting a filename - how do I set up the same in
XP-home?

Enable Common Tasks, and switch to the default folder view (single pane).

Start - Run the line
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

And make sure that at Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance
click Settings that at the bottom of the panel 'Use common tasks in
folders' is checked
