preview window lag

Has anyone else experienced an unreasonably long lag time between clicking on
an email in your inbox and seeing the preview appear below it? Today I
counted a full 7 seconds before the preview appeared. Any suggestions as to
a diagnosis and how to cure this ailment.
 
And your version and patchlevel of Outlook would be...?
