Preventing Wireless Connection

My neighbors have all now seen the light and set up
wireless networks in their houses. This has created a
problem for me because, while mine is set up with WEP,
theirs are not, and my laptopconstantly tries to connect
to their network rather than mine, which causes me to
frequently drop my VPN to the office, among other things.
I have looked everywhere, but cannot find a way to block
my laptop from connecting to these other wireless
networks. Am I missing something? If I simply remove
them Windows automatically re-detects them in minutes.
And moving them down in the priority list doesn't seem to
help either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, since you are on talking terms with the
neighbor...maybe configure his router/AP to block your MAC
address. Or to only allow his MAC's.

Check to ensure that Windows connects only to preferred networks.
Start, run then type in:
ncpa.cpl [ok]
Right click on the wireless connection/ Choose properties
Goto the Wireless Networks tab
Click the button 'Advanced' at the bottom of the page.
Ensure that the box labelled 'Automatically conncet to
non-preferred network' is unchecked.

On the Access Point/Router
1. Make sure you are broadcasting the SSID and that it is not the
default name that the manufacturer selected
2. Make sure you are using a different channel than the one set by
default (try 1 or 11)

Thank you!

And do I ensure that the networks I want to connect to are
the preferred networks simply by having them in the bottom
window (Preferred networks)?

Yes. Add the networks you want to connect to as preferred networks.

Thank you!
