Prevent Shares

I have the unfortunate job of managing a network full of Windows XP Home
(SP2) PCs! The company is too damn cheap to purchase XP Pro & a domain
controller. I have a problem with people sharing their system (C:\) drives
with full rights. I tell them not to do it and I've even played with them by
deleting program folders from their PCs. They don't seem to want to comply.
I'd like to know how I can prevent the sharing of HDDs. I don't mind sharing
a folder or 2. They are just lazy and don't wish to put things in folders -
they'd rather share the whole drive and dig through it as needed. At this
point I'm thinking about getting into their share C dirve and adding a little
script to their Stratup folder - see how they like it when things start
getting deleted.....

Is there some sort of a reg-hack I can do or something of the sort?

how many is a network full? If you've anymore than 5 and your Co. really
are not willing to buy a server you could get a cheap network storage
device, you create an organised folder structure on it (which only you
would have controll of) and have people share files using that Then make
sure every user only has user rights and not admin right on their PCs, that
should stop them creating shares.

Yeah, I have another PC that I've got folder shared on. Some are willing to
use it and some are not. I have one guy who is a self proclaimed expert at
EVERYTHING! He is my biggest problem. He's the one ordering all the XP Home
PCs from Dell (about 70) without consulting my company - which his company
pays a monthly contract fee for! He's the one going around sharing all these
drives he "needs" to get in to. I'm currently working on that and many other
issues I have with his "vast networking knowledge." Nonetheless, that
solution will still be hard to deploy. Making these people USERS instead of
ADMINISTRATORS may also conflict with some of their other software. Do POWER
USERS have the ability to make shares? Any other possible answer?

think you need to have a word with someone high up, either you're running
the IT dept or that geezer is.

We run all our users as "users" almost all conflicts with any apps can be
resolved by giving the user (or the "everyone" group) write access to the
applications folder in the the "programs files" folder. It should be easy
enough to test a PC out. Don't know much about XPHome, hopefully theres an
everyone group?

If you have shares created on a machine, create a logon script to map these
drives when a user logs on, that way they'll apppear in my computer and be
just as easy to use as the C:\. All this is way more difficult to do
without a domain in place but doable none the less. Be aware though, if the
machine you have the shares on is only a desktop theres a limit to how many
people can access it at a time (XP Pro=10, XP Home=5) A server or a NAS box
would solve this.

Yeah, the guy is something like 2nd in command and going above his head just
sends it back his way since 1st in command relies heavily on this guy for
"computer advice." They are all XP Home. XP Home doesn't have any real way
to tweak NTFS Permissions - there's no Security tab for folders or drives. I
worked with an NAS box a few years ago and it was flakey, at best! Are they
better these days? Hell, the guy is too cheap to spend the few extra $$ at
Dell for XP Pro, so I don't know how I'll get an NAS box out of this guy!
