Prevent searching for network places?

Each time I open My Network Places, the window goes blank while it searches
for shared folders on other Workgroup computers (a home workgroup of all XP
systems).

In searching here and elsewhere, the solution suggested seems to be:

Tools | Folder options... | View and uncheck the "Automatically search
for ..." box.

But no joy. I can set and unset that box with no change.

It takes 10 seconds to 30 seconds to populate the window and I would just
like it to keep the ones that it has now and not look for new ones, and also
not validate that the listed ones are actually available at the moment.

TIA

Paul,

From Windows Explorer, select Tools - Folder Options. On the View tab, deselect
"Automatically search for network folders and printers".

Chuck,

That is exactly what I have been doing... it doesn't change the
outcome.
Then don't use Network Places. It can be really hinky. Instead, make a
folder on your Desktop cleverly called something like "Network". Use
the Search for computers on the network function to find desired
network resources and make shortcuts to them in your new Network
folder. Remove the Network Places icon from the Desktop with the
Display applet>Desktop>Customize.

<slaps forehead and says "duh"> Thanks Malke, that seems only too obvious
now that you mention it. If that is my only option, then that is certainly
very workable for me. Thanks again.

I won't say it's the "only option" but it works and I'm always focused
on Just Getting The Job Done. I ran into the same issue with Network
Places because I have a very mixed OS network - it's a computer browser
issue. MVP Steve Winograd (who I consider my Network Guru) suggested
forgetting about Network Places. Works for me. :-)
