In Word 2003, Tools/Auto Correct/Auto Format tab, what does the "preserve Styles" feature do?
Thanks!

Hi Mary Lee,

If you use the Format/AutoFormat command to have Word automatically format your document, if "Preserve Styles" is enabled Word will not replace styles you have applied in your document.

If it is not enabled then Word will apply styles in your document according to paragraph length, content, similar formatting, etc.

BTW, I don't know of anyone experienced in using Word who actually uses
AutoFormat on documents that they create. It can sometimes improve documents
received from another source (but I would only use on a copy).

I've been known to use it. :-)

The majority of the options are turned off, of course, but I use it for converting hyperlinks and converting straight quotes to smart quotes.

Back in Word 6 I used it all the time for removing empty paragraph marks, tabs and spaces. I'm not sure why they removed those options...
