I've searched the inernet and can not find this problem anywhere so i am hoping someone will know what i can do to resolve this.

On booting up Windows XP i get 9 occurances of "Preparing to Install", which all eventually disappear. They appear on each bootup.

I've scanned the registry, documents and settings too.

I've downloaded various programs to see what is being loaded at start time but there are no "program install" routines present.

So where are these "program installations" coming from? Does any one know and if so how do i clear them?

Thank you in advance.

Did you look in WININIT.INI?

I get the same problem, but not on bootup; it happens when I start any
one of a dozen or more programs.

Where would I find wininit.ini? I'm running win xp home.

To follow up my own post, somebody mentioned the event viewer, and I
found an 'event 1001 warning' for each of the seven 'preparing to
install' messages from trying to start one application. I found
something like 80 of them over the past 18 hours, which gives you an
idea of how often this thing pops up.

In addition there was one 'event 1002 - error'.

They don't mean much to me, but perhaps they do to someone who can
advise me. This is just an annoyance, but it has been spreading; it
started with one or two applications, and is now going on with about a
dozen.

1001

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Going there just gets a message that no information is available, but
another popup says that msi.dll is involved with event id 1001.

'error' - event 1002.

I found this entry in the registry. it has two values 'default' and
'_mainfeature', both of which have nulls for values.
