I tried stopping and restarting Task Mgr but folder didn't re-appear? How
can I re-initialize my prefetch function?

Recreate taskmanager prefetch file in WINDOWS\Prefetch ?

You run taskmanager again.

You did and it didn't show up? Hit F5 to refresh.

*** I fixed it after reviewing other solutions on this subject for other
folks with same issue by changing Dword value in prefetch registry back to 1
from 0. Somehow it got changed to "0" which turned prefetch off.

you will need an original xp installation disc.

go to start > run and type in the box

SFC /scannow

NOTE the space between C and /
press OK and it will start the file checking and replacing
process...it will probably ask you for your installation
disc...insert it into the optical drive and press ok...normally takes
about 10 minutes or more to run the SFC (system file checker)

Didn't you read the note from me above, I fixed it by changing the prefetcg
reg entry to Dword value of "1", it had been changed to "0", turning it off.

If you are refering to the EnablePrefetcher registry value that should
be set to 3 which is the default and optimal. You can simply restore
this and other registry keys and services relating to Prefetching using
the *Prefetcher fix* found here:
