I have this feature turned on (I do have a check next to it under Tools,
AutoCorrect), yet when I insert a piece of clipart with the current layout as
"Title & Text", it does not automatically change to "Text & Clipart" -
anybody know why?

Are you using PPT 2003?

The behavior of this button was changed a bit in PPT 2003, because the way
it worked in 2002 was extremely confusing for most users.

yes, i am using 2003 at home - but at work we are using 2002 (xp) - this
feature does not work at all in 2003 - is there a reason - or how does it
work?

I don't think it works in PPT 2003.

The reason it was changed is that, basically, PowerPoint was doing something
unexpected and that the user hadn't asked for; they thought they were inserting
pictures, PowerPoint was changing the slide layout, putting the pictures into
placeholders, moving things around later if you added more pictures and so on.

Handy if it happens to do what you want it to; VERY disconcerting if it
doesn't.

In any case, the feature (or bug, depending on whether it helped or hindered
you) is gone in 2003.

How were you using it? What problem did it solve? Maybe there's another way
around it.

I teach a PPT class - I know how this feature works in XP, but when you try
to use it in 2003, does not work. For example, I have the layout "Title &
Text" - then if i click "Insert" and clip art - (in XP) it is suppose to
change the layout to "Title, Text, & Content", yet in 2003 it does not change
it - I guess if they took this feature away, then why do they have this
feature listed under "Tools" under AutoCorrect - why list this feature if it
they took the feature away?

It may have been an oversight, or the behavior change may have happened at
the last minute. Your guess is as good as mine.

As I said, they removed it in 2003.

The particular behavior you're after is one aspect (a side effect, almost) of the
feature. It works for some types of inserted objects but not others, which would
explain why the feature is still listed.

But again, what problem DID the feature solve for you the way it used to work in
2002?

Perhaps there's another way of solving the same problem in 2003.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the Critical
Update or Service Pack 1 for Office 2003 as soon as possible. From
PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for Updates".]

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329820]

Hello,

The setting "Automatic layout for inserted objects" still works in
PowerPoint for OLE objects, Diagrams, Copy/Paste of tables from
Word/Excel/PowerPoint to PowerPoint (changes to Table layout), etc. It
just doesn't work for inserted pictures anymore in PowerPoint 2003 since it
was that specific scenario (inserting pictures) where most PowerPoint 2002
(Office XP) customers did NOT want the layout to change automatically.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) have suggestions about how and
when PowerPoint slide layouts change as content is added to a slide, don't
forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft by
either:

PREFERRED METHOD:

A) If you are using Microsoft's web-based, online newsreader for Office
communities
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.p
ublic.powerpoint), check to see whether or not the suggestion has been
submitted before (Show -> Suggestions for Microsoft) and, if so, add your
vote to the suggestion submission. If the suggestion has not been submitted
before, click on the "New" drop-down menu and choose "Suggestion for
Microsoft" from directly within the newsreader web page.

OR, NEXT BEST METHOD:

B) If you are using another newsreader (such as Microsoft Outlook Express),
submit your suggestion using your web browser at the following address:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
