Sorry, I googled (I should have first)
will Powerpoint reader 2003 suffice? it is a much smaller program than
the whopper 28Mb 2007 model.

Thanks

It is a Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show.
Open it with PowerPoint or get the free viewer from Microsoft if you
don't have PowerPoint.

Thanks Alan, Gordon.
the blighter still will not open.
I spied a similar occurence when I googled from "ask leo"
I'll pop back there a view his advice.
I have checked folder options / view file types
and allocated PPS to power point slide show / rebooted
but no joy.
Cheers Rod.

I saved the pps file to a known folder location
opened windows expolrer (m'soft key +E)
right clicked the file / properties
followed the advice re "unblocking"
works fine.
Cheers.

Can you or anyone else explain what you mean by "unblocking?"

Right clicking a file does not bring that option up for me.

G'day Fred,
perhaps the word was "unlocking"
I cannot replicate the scenario, because I don't have a locked file.
the advice does not come up on normal files
If memory serves, an extended drop down box appeared
with a tickable box, and explanation why the file was locked.
If it happens again, I'll snag a screen shot.

Hello Rod,

Thanks for the information.

I asked because a neighbor has a Dell Laptop and he gets the "...not a
valid win32 application..." when he double clicks on his *.ppt file.

If he runs PowerPoint, he can open the same file with no issues at all -
the problem occurred only when he double clicks the presentation file
itself.

I had him check and reset the file association but that did not solve
the problem.

A few articles I found with a Google Groups search on the subject:

"There is a conflict with PPS and XP/SP2. See this link for a fix:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ppsopen.htm "

"Try the fixes here:
Unable to open .PPS attachments directly from Outlook Express
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ppsopen.htm "
