PPPoE connection differences Laptop vs Router

Hi,
Can somebody give a an idea why my laptop (win XP) can connect to the
internet using PPPoE and my router (linksys WRT54G v5) can't?!
I was even more confused when finding my laptop will not succeed in
connecting if I insert a switch in the loop to the provider modem/hub ...?
Got Ethereal traces for both cases:
- laptop directly connected to provider - all OK
- laptop first connected to switch and switch to provider - no server
responding to PADI
Many thanks in advance,
Nicolae

Hi,

Just trying to help,

Router connection: I'm not familiar with your router model, but assumed you
have set up PPPoE connection within your router admin?

When you tested router connection to the provider, did it show "connection
succeeded"? If not, you may need to reconfigure the connection, per user's
manual, again.

If yes (and some routers provide PING test to ensure connection to Internet
is ok), it then will be the problem between your laptop and the router.

In some cases, I found it is the problem of installing and using a 3rd party
connection utility (weather it's from your notebook vendor, ISP, or other
sources), instead of using Windows build-in connection functions.

To be sure, you may wish to disable or un-install a 3rd party connection
utility (e.g. PPPoE dial-up software) when accessing your router for
connection. Make sure Wireless Zero Configuration under Windows Service is
running, and use Windows Wireless Network Connection for accessing router.

You may also check router configuration to ensure that it is functioning as
the default gateway, DNS, and DHCP, which should be the default setting in
most cases.

Use ipconfigure to see if your notebook is using the router as the gateway,
DNS, and DHCP and if it can acquire an IP address from the router.

If all of above failed, I guess you would need to connect router vendor
and/or ISP.

For ISP, you wish to make sure if they allow connection via router and if
so, are there any specific settings need to be performed.

For Linksys, after you make sure ISP is ok, you may wish to report this
problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi and thanks for your feedback.
Unfortunately my problem comes from the fact that I haven't been able to
connect my router (without any PCs or Laptops behind it).
Basicaly the PPPoE connection between router and provider failes to
establish.
I've noticed PADI messages going out from the router (when I conect it to my
laptop on WAN router interface) looking the same (in Ethereal) as the
messages sent by my laptop (this time when I connect laptop to provider) and
never receiving a PADO (from PPPoE server).
There fore: what can be different in the provider's network behaviour
(Server ???!) when
receiving messages from router compared with the Laptop (or other PC)!!!
All the best,
Nicolae

I have a Linksys router but I use PPPoA not PPPoE and it works fine, but I
am in the UK and think that might be the difference.
Cheers
Tony

When this happened to me (WRT54G v 1.0), it was because the router was fried
(power surge). The wireless part of the router continued to work just fine, but
the power surge had damaged some circuitry in the interface to the DSL modem
(which also had to be replaced). You might try asking at

Hello All,
Here is my recent findings about PPPoE message flows on both cases:
1 (Laptop - Provider) - Message flow OK as per RFC 2516:
Laptop
Provider
|------------> PADI ----------------------->| (frame # 17)
|<------------ PADO <----------------------|
|------------> PADR ---------------------->|
|<------------ PADS <----------------------|
2 (Router - Provider) - Flow not OK
|------------> PADI ----------------------->| (frame # 127)
|<------------ PADO <----------------------| from server #1
|<------------ PADO <----------------------| from another
server ???!
........................
|------------> PADI ----------------------->|
|<------------ PADO <----------------------| from server #1
|<------------ PADO <----------------------| from another
server ???!
and the sequence repeats several more times before router decides to stop
trying.
In conclusion I would say the router is not capable of interpreting the
Offers (PADO) sent by the PPPoE server!!
Next I'll go straight to Linksys for explanation/fixes,
I'll keep you guys posted on the progres I make.
Many thanks to the ones replying to this post.

Nicolae

Hello all,
Today my problem got fixed.
The way it worked was to return the WRT54G to the supplier and get an
WRT54GL in exchange. :)
Coincidence or not I met at the supplier's office one guy with the same
issue of WRT54G v5! It is also confirmed by the local supplier they have
done several other replacements recently.
My own recommandation to the ones that intend to use v5 series for PPPoE
(all the other WAN connection protocols seams to work) is better use a GL
version.
This one worked from start!
All the best for now,
Nicolae
