Couple of things to check:
1) Do your animations run longer than 5 seconds?
2) Do you have a piece of music (or a movie) that is playing longer than 5
seconds?
3) After you set the time to advance, did you check the box for advance on
mouse click?
If none of these help, post back with a little more detail. Information that
will help includes your PPT version, when the slide does change (or does it
take a mouse click to change it), and what's on the next slide. It might
also help to know if this happens on one slide or on all slides/
