Powerpoint presentation on tv

Can someone please tell me how to show my powerpoint presentation on my tv -
from my laptop to my tv. I have the video and audio chords connecting the
them and I am using windows xp. I was told that the only thing I needed to do
was push the F4 button to display to the tv and F5 to start the slideshow.
Please help.

Whoever told you that is not knowledgeable in this area. A TV cannot display
the graphics output from a PC, they use completely different systems. As far
as I know you have 2 options:

1.) Either use a signal converter or a video card with TV output (the latter
could be difficult with a laptop), see

2). Or use software that converts a ppt presentation to burn on a DVD, which
can ten be played on a TV. Google for convert PowerPoint to DVD for lots of
information on this.
 
Some video cards have the capability to do this. I am assuming you are using
one. If it was a tech. support guy that told u this, then he probably left
out the part that you need to hold down the Function (Fn) key while pressing
it. Also, make sure that the logo on the F4 key resembles a TV. If not , hold
down the Function key and press the ones that do look like a TV. If your
laptop's screen goes blank, you probably pressed the right one. Keep pressing
it to get the right combination (if you know what I mean)

Is your laptop's video card capable of producing a TV-Out signal via an
S-video cable (consult its manual), and do you have the television's
input selection (Cable/Video/Antenna/S-Video) set correctly?

The good thing about this solution is that you do not have to use your
laptop after conversion.
You just use a PowerPoint to DVD conversion program to convert a
presentation to a video file then burn the video file to a dvd with a
dvd burner.
