What version of Windows are you running? If it is Windows 2000, have you
applied Service Pack 3?

Does the error message give you the option to Ignore?

I am running version XP.

Options are to retry or quit.

When I select retry the error reappears. Quit ends the install.

Did you uninstall Office 2003 before trying to reinstall? Is
C:\config.msi\PTA5.tmp the full path that the message displays?

Didn't uninstall for fear of losing data. ( hundreds of emails contacts and
appointments)

Yes. That is the full path.

Could I simply uninstall the patch that has made the reinstallation fail?

How can I identify which patch is the problem?

We'd better back up. What makes you think it's a patch that caused the problem?
Did you give us the full and completely exact error message?

Sorry. Yes there was reference to a patch that has been installed that is
preventing the reinstallation. I didn't write down the exact wording but, it
did not reference which patch it was only that there was a patch preventing
the reinstall.

Error 1328. Error applying patch to file C:\config.msi\pt16e.tmp. It has
probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this
patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.

Were you doing the automatic update thingie? If not, which patch or Service
Pack were you trying to apply? I don't see anything in the knowledge base that
is of use here. I think that you need to call Microsoft and get their help.

Yes. I'm set up for auto update.

Is it possible to just uninstall PowerPoint and then reinstall it?

Before you do that, do you have a checkpoint that you can restore from? Go to
Start > Help and Support and under Pick a Task look for "Undo changes to your
computer with Sytem Restore". Check "Restore my computer to an earlier time"
and then click on Next. A calendar will appear. There probably isn't a
checkpoint created for 11/24, so click on Tuesday (11/23). Pick the first one
you find and then click on Next. The system will go through a process that
includes restarting. Don't touch anything until you see a message that says
that the restore was a success. Read the message carefully because sometimes
the restore cannot be done.

When that finishes try opening PowerPoint. Has the problem gone away? If not
you'll want to try the next available checkpoint, going backwards in time. You
may be able to get PowerPoint working again this way. It all depends on when
this problem was introduced to your system. If that doesn't work, you can try
uninstalling Office 2003, but that should be the last resort because most likely
it will not clean out the problem.
