I am running windows xp sp2, on a compaq laptop. I have powerpoint 2003

presentation new or old will insert with no problem but when i preview or try
to play in slide show power point will crash, made sure i have all the
apporiate codecs installed and i do not have any other programs installed
like quicktime, windvd. also tried reinstalling office with fresh version
with no luck. tried converting to avi with no luck, Did get it to work one
time when i changed the file name and it worked fine but if i shutdown
powerpoint and restart it, it will fail. someone pls help

Can you describe what happens when it "crashes"? Do you get an error message,
and if so, what is the full exact message? Do you have service pack 1 installed
for Office 2003?

yes i have sp1 installed on office, it will go to the slide act like its
going to start up the mpg video and then crash error says Faulting
application powerpnt.exe, version 11.0.6361.0, stamp 40da0eb9, faulting
module mciqtz32.dll, version 6.5.2600.2180, stamp 4110969c, debug? 0, fault

It looks like it's failing in the mpeg dll. Please go to
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm and read through
section 3, at least. At the end of that section you'll find the Registry
settings that you need to compare to your system. I think that you'll find that
they all match, but you should check anyway. I strongly recommend that you do
update your video driver and see whether that corrects the problem or changes
it. See:

Drivers and such?

I am having this EXACT same problem. I read through that stuff. My registry
settings all match. I updated my video drivers, patched Windows, etc.

Still no go. Any thoughts?

mpeg2 but I ended up fixing the problem yesterday.

The problem lies in the MPEG2 codec installed on the machine. MPEG2 is some
how corrupted. Not enough to prevent the movies from playing fine on their
own but just enough to mess up powerpoint when it passes the video to the
codec to start playing.

I corrected my issue by downloading a new MPEG2 codec/decoder. Also
Microsoft has a utility to check your MPEG codecs that are on your machine.
I used that to help trouble shoot as well. DVD players sometimes install
mpeg2 codecs on a computer that interfere with normal operations.

Thanks all!
