Powerpoint 2003 exits after open dialogue displayed

Hi - this one has me stumped, I wonder if anyone can shed some light.

I hadn't used PPT for a while and tried to startup yesterday, so I'm
not sure what might've changed on my machine between when it was
working and now it isn't. All other Office programs work fine.

PPT loads up without any issue.

File > Open displays the dialogue as normal, but after around 30
seconds the PPT process is silently shutdown, dlg disappears, PPT
disappears. There's no trace of PPT in the running processes, and no
report of an error.

Any pointers / advice would be most appreciated!

PS - I've done the usual, repair / re-install etc.

Hi John, thanks for the response - re SP2: yes; or at least I assume
so, auto updates are on and office>check for updates says all up to
date.

Click on Help, and About PowerPoint, that will tell you all about your
version.

Try doing a Detect and Repair and see if that helps. You may want to check
here if your running Norton Anti Virus

| Version: 2003 / 11.6564.6568 / SP2 , so yes, SP2 installed.

Any add ins that can be disabled?

You might also want to check you have the latest video drivers and /or notch
back hardware acelleration.

I take it this happens with all files?

I think I may have some progress. I'm using PointeCast with PPT which
has never caused a problem, however it appears (according to the
PointeCast team) that Windows Live Messenger causes some
incompatability issues. I've yet to discover a clean way of
uninstalling WLM, but once I do I'll post the result if positive.
Thanks for your help so far..

No problem ... and please DO get back with us either way.

Fixed: Windows Live Messenger Beta / PointeCast 4.3 don't work
together, causing PowerPoint to exhibit odd behaviour. Remove of WLM
(from the installer) fixed the problem completely.

That's two strikes against the WLM beta; someone else found other conflicts
between it and PPT.

Thanks!
