I have a Compaq peserio. I was doing a user backup through the utility CD
provided by Compaq (and i believe it was creating a partition to backup the
data) and for some resason the power shut down. I restarted the system but
ever since i am not able to run the windows. It only shows a black window
with options like safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, Normal windows
etc...i tried all of them but system does not run in safe mode nor does it go
to the command prompt. Everytime i use any of the option it comes back to the
same screen. I also tried making the hard drive slave with another system. I
recognises my 40 GB hard drive...but it only shows me one partition with 7 GB
with none of my personal data in it.

I could reformat the disk but i want to get the data. Could anyone suggest
what could have happened and what could be the resolution.

Thanks

As you are using a Compaq PC and Compaq software to perform this function:
which then rendered your computer useless, one would expect the best place
for an accurate response would be via Compaq's help line.

If possible avoid using the System Recovery disk set, provided with the
computer, to rebuild the computer to factory fresh state. It will wipe out
any of your data, if it is still there.

You could attempt to perform a repair installation of XP, however as you
have partitions and 'lost data' it would be best to impress upon Compaq that
they have to help you solve the problems.
