Power problem

I installed a new wireless network card in my uncle computer, I have
installed 100's of cards over the years with no problems. However after
installation it turns on, I can hear the fan, the light on the opical mouse
lights up but nothing else happens. No signal goes to the monitor, the cd
drive will not open, no noise is made at all. I can't say for sure, but I
do not think the hard drive starts at all. I am thinking it could be the
power supply but I really have no idea. Thanks in advance.

Have you made a thorough inspection to see that you id not dislodge a power
or interface connector?

Have you checked to see that the NIC is properly inserted in the PCI slot?

If both above are not the problem, unplug the NIC and see if the PC powers up.

Yes I did. I guess I should of mentioned that. I also tried with the
original card.

Thanks, tried those already.

You may have shorted out the power supply. See if there is a reset button
anywhere.

They all have internal fuses but I wouldn't suggest going there if you are
not well educated electrically. You may get a nasty electric shock from
devices (electrolytic capacitors) that retain power - even when the computer
is unplugged from the wall.

Disconnect the power plug, remove the large ATX connector that runs fron the
power supply to the motherboard. Leave it disconnected for about 3 to 5
minutes. Reconnect it to the motherboard, plug in the power and fire it up.
If it doesn't start then, I would suspect a shorted motherboard or perhaps
you have disturbed the IDE ribbon cables to the motherboard.
Good Luck

Thanks, tried that still doesn't work, the cpu fan runs but that is it. Am
I correct in assuming if its a shorted motherboard I am screwed and will
need to get a new one?
