What am I suppose to do with my PC in the night.

"Shut Down" cause me problems.

What is the "common" state?
1) Shut Down
2) STANDBY
3) "HALF MOON"

I do understand that this is a general question but still..

What's wrong with shutting down your computer at night? Its personal choice
what you do with yours but I leave one of mine running all the time because
I run a ftp server off it. The other I shutdown. Although there are times I
put it on standby, usually when I am going to be using it again within the
hour. There is no 'common state' as you put it, it really is what works for
you.

I have no idea what you mean by 'half moon'.

The half-moon button that many keyboards sport - it's called a "Sleep"
button. Usually puts the computer running Windows into a "standy-by" state
here - although through Power Options I can set it to turn off the computer
instead etc. etc..

I can readily make my computer:

Restart
Shutdown
Hibernate
Stand-by

"Half-moon" is the traditional symbol carved into an outhouse door.

I have no idea what it means in this context either.

I can tell you what many companies do, and most computers these days
are designed for use commercially.

The companies I've worked at leave the computers on 24/7. The
occasional exception to that is that over weekends, some companies
turn the computers off.

Some companies will shut off the computers over LONG weekends.

However, today's computers (including yours if you have a nice green
"Star" icon on the top right corner of your screen) are designed to be
power savers, and they consume no more energy than your refrigerator.
(not much).

If you don't turn off your refrigerator when you go to bed for the
night, or if you take off for a 2-week trip, don't turn off your
computer, either.

The only exception I can think of to that would be if you are
concerned with the computer starting a fire (highly unlikely).

One of the NICE things about leaving the computer on 24/7 (even if you
turn off the modem when you're not "on it") is that, if you want to do
something "quick" at 3 AM, when you're coming back from your 3 AM "pee
run", the computer is sitting there, waiting for you.

If you turned it off at 1 AM when you headed for beddy/by and the
wifey/husband, then you have to sit down and turn it on and WAIT
before you can read your e-mail or write that BRILLIANT thought down.

Short version:

Leave it on unless you're
1. upgrading
2. rebooting
3. troubleshooting
