Since upgrading to Pro I've had a number of significant problems. With very
good help (on individual topic threads) we gone through quite a bit of
testing and diagnostics but none have worked so far.

A complete log of the situation and the work done to date is here:

http://home.comcast.net/~tdcarp/documents/Log.pdf

The work has included clean boot and boot without all starts disabled, full
virus scans, etc. but so far no luck. Interestingly, even the XP Activate
program is failing.

For awhile, these have been discussed as individual problems, but I can't
help but think that there is a pattern (or two) that underlies all the issues.

I would REALLY appreciate more eyes on this to see if anyone sees a common
theme or has experienced similar problems.

Thanks

You know, I am real close to the same conclusion. Not so much IE7 but IE in
general.

Along the way to figuring this out I read somewhere that Start>Help and
Support use IE. If other programs are also using it for their help, there
might be a pattern for at least some of the symptoms.

Today I decided to do what you did. But what I found was that there was no
listing in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs for IE (and version). What's a
little wierd is that some weeks before doing the Home->Pro upgrade I had
upgraded to IE7.

My suspicion is that the upgrade disk somehow wiped it out probably because
it was going to install an earlier version.

What's a little funny is the catch 22: To download IE7 from MSFT's site the
OS needs to have been validated. But to validate it you need IE.

I'm going to shift over to the IE Discussion Group and see if anyone there
has seen my symptoms and has any idea how to get IE6 (which is on my laptop
and I can execute it) back in action.

Thanks for the post

I think the issue of IE is part of the problem.

there is an IE 7.0 removal tool in
C:\WINDOWS\ie7\spuninst
spuninst.exe

good luck
I don't have the file there. There are a ton of files that start out
$NtuninstallkB followed by a half dozen numbers.

When I eventually get to the bottom of this I'll be sure to let you know.

You should be able to remove IE7 (rolling back to IE6) from add/remove in
control panel. Dont forget to hide the IE7 update on the wu site or it will
install it right back depending on your settings.

Hi, the funny thing is that IE doesn't show up in the Add/Remove Program
list (assuming it's in the Change or Remove Programs tab). In the Windows
components tab IE is there but all it says it will do is add IE to the start
programs and desktop.
