I've removed the Blaster virus and installed all the
critical updates at the Windows Auto Update site. Still,
Windows XP will not shutdown through the start menu or
through the task manager. The only shutdown is by
physically pushing the power button on the computer box.
This behavior started with the Blaster virus, so my
working assumption is that it is connected to the virus.
If I prevent DirectX from loading on startup, the problem
goes away. Upgrading to DirectX 9.0b did not fix the
problem. On a long-shot, I also upgraded our version of
EasyCD Creator (known to cause this problem), but that
did not fix the problem either.
We're running Windows XP Home Edition w/ Service Pack 1
(5.1, Build 2600). The DirectX ver. is 9.0b (build
4.09.0000.0902). The computer is a Gateway desktop with
a 2.0GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
